Historic Chattooga Academy
The City of LaFayette has a rich history of Native American, Civil War and African American history. The city is also home to Chattooga Academy (also known as Gordon Hall).
Chattooga Academy is one of LaFayette’s most cherished historic landmarks is believed to be one of Georgia’s oldest remaining brick school buildings.
The structure, completed in 1836, was later renamed John B. Gordon Hall after General John Brown Gordon.
Gordon attended Chattooga Academy as a child.
Gordon later went on to serve as a Confederate General. He was elected as the
Governor of Georgia in 1886 and is also a two-time United States Senator.
The building was used for a variety of purposes during the Battle of LaFayette.
General Braxton Bragg planned the Battle of Chickamauga under an old oak tree that once stood on the grounds of Chattooga Academy.
